Greek and Roman Sculpture

You and your partner have to do some internet research. Your task is to find 2 differences and 2 similarities in Greek and Roman sculpture.

I do not suggest trying to find an article that someone has written and posted... It is alot of reading and most articles discuss the differences in their ARCHITECTURE, not their SCULPTURE.

I recommend that you simply IMAGE SEARCH Greek sculpture and then image search Roman sculpture and use your own fresh mind, intuition, and perspective to make these observations...

You and your partner will then post these DIFFERENCES/SIMILARITIES in a post on this blog to take care of the 5 points for the quiz we are not having this week.

Click on the little comments line next to the little PENCIL below this text to add your answers/insight.

Do not forget to end your BLOG POST answer with the names of you & your partner!!!

  7. Similarities: Most of those statues that have survived are made of marble. Most of them have little or no pupil definition and are highly detailed.

Differences: Roman statues are more likely to express emotion while most Greek statues have serene features. Roman statues' characteristic face tends to have a broader, "Roman" nose, and they are less idealized.

  8. Sims: Both Roman and Greek had very detailed sculptures of the human body. And were very nude and were made from stone.

Diffs: The detail work on some seemed to be better than others. And then some of the greek sculptures were more god based, or had man and animal combined.

  9. Something that they have in common is that the artists are still foucusing on the human body as their insperation, but the Romans start to cover up the mens bodys with clothes. The Greeks seem to focuse on the strengh, and the details of the human body, while the Romans start to tell more of a storie with their art. The Romans make their sculptures more interesting to look at, not only with the bodys, but with animals, and the different ways that the body can move.

  25. Roman sculptures seem to be serene and soft, concentrating more on the face and almost intellect or creativity, whereas the Greek sculptures seem to focus more on the strength of body, holding spears and wearing helmets, to represent power.

Both the Greek and Roman sculptures concentrate deeply on the definition of the human body and, many of them are of more than one person, maybe to suggest unity or compassion.

  26. Great! You guys really understood this. The differences are subtle, but they exist. ROMANS were more comfortable with showing EMOTION. They had a wider variety of POSES. they used more DETAIL. and their sculptures were more recognizable as actual specific PEOPLE- not just generic faces.

I think, as a class, you covered ALL of the major points!
