  1. Marat Assassinated in His Bath

John Marat was a jounalist who was killed by a French Revolutionary man. This man blamed Marat for the September massacres. David and Marat were friends, therefore, this painting was painted in memory of his dear friend.

  2. The Third of May

The situation surrounding this painting was Napoleon was trying to gain control of Spain for the Med. Spanish people were resentful to this new French government and rose up. The painting depicts the French reprisals. This artist was trying to show the rigidity of the French and the power they wielded, probably to try to instill outrage and protestation among the other Spaniards.

  3. what inspired the piece, Marat assassinated in his bath, was the death of jean-paul marat. He was many things along with a politician and journalist during the french revolution. Marat had a skin disease due to hiding out in the sewers during the war so he would take relaxing cold baths. A man named Corday killed him, and blamed him for the september massacre. He said he killed 1 to save 100,000. I think the artist was trying to depict the irony of the situation with being in the bath and writing things, it's not the best way to die.

  4. Liberty leading the People,Painted on 28 July 1830, to commemorate the July Revolution that had just brought Louis-Philippe to the French throne; Louvre.
The painting describes the people who rose and dethroned the Bourbon king.
Delacroix, the young man in the painting wearing the opera hat, was present on the barricades in July 1830.

The Third of May 1808: the random executions of the Spanish people resulted from the fighting in the Puerto del Sol area of Madrid repeated throughout the Spanish countryside, as the French commanders failed to acquiesce the national mood they instead made it more furious, the artist is trying to say how brutally and humanly wrong the violence is and it suspended his affection for French freedoms as a spanish liberal.

Liberty Leading the People: A commemoration of the French Revolution of 1830 that dominated Charles X, he wanted to depict liberty personified by Marianne who was the symbol of the nation and was quoted saying, "If I haven’t fought for my country at least I’ll paint for her" he was trying to be patriotic and be proud of his country and made it universal by adding many different social classes.

  6. The event was the crowning and the coronation of Napolean. It took place at Notre-Dame de Paris. People from france and paris were there. the main people that were there were the Pope and Napolean. Napolean wanted to prove that he was the king of the revolution, he didn't want anyone to doubt him. I think the artist was just trying to show the event how he pictured it. He wanted to show off his skills.

  7. Marat Assassinated in His Bath, by Jacques-Louis David was inspired by the assassination of Marat by Charlotte Croday. He was assassinated because he was partly responsible for the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was a period of murderings and assassinations that were part of the French Revolution. The two parties responsible were the Jacobins and the Gerondins. The French "Government" (or what existed of it) and France was the country involved. I believe that Jacques-Louis was trying to portray the fact that it doesn't matter who you are, or where you stand in either faction, you aren't safe from the fighting.

  8. Marat Assassinated in His Bath

I think the event that happened here was that the people thought he was too mercyful and wanted to kill so the chick stapped him in the chest. Jean-paul Marat. France was the country involed in this painting. I think what the artist was trying to say was you should have some respect against others and be nicer to other people

i chose Liberty leading the people.
the painting is supposed to portray the people rising to dethrone the bourbone king. the people of france were involved. i think the artist was trying to say that the people hold the power.

  10. The Coronation of Napoleon, by Jacques-Louis David

I found this one to be the most interesting because unlike the others, which were about death or war, this was a way for Napoleon to say that France had a new king, and he was up for the job. Having read the Biography of Napoleon in the 7th grade, I can tell you that this painting might have contributed to why his people loved him so much. The old rulers were bad, and dead, so even after he was sentenced to exile, the people of France helped him escape and come back. (He was then exiled onto a different island.... even farther away.) Obviously this political statement worked.

  11. Liberty Leading the People:

The event taking place in this piece is the French Revolution. People involved in this piece are a woman who represents liberty, people that have died, and fighters who liberty is leading with a flag and gun. Government/countries that were involved consisted of the French and only France because it was a revolutionary war. The artist was trying to have confidence. He was saying that we can be victorious and make it through this fight even though people are dead and it is definitely a struggle and hard, they can make it. Liberty is leading them over the dead bodies, showing them they can do it, they just have to make it through obstacles and suffer some, but they need to have confidece and walk around with their heads up high and be triumphant.

  12. The Third of May 1808

the events in this painting is that the french held up some spanish soldiers and started to kill them in 1 group. the people involved were the spanish and the french. I think what the artist is trying to say is that how bad the french revolution really was and people killed unarmed people for no reason

  13. I thought that the Lady Liberty leading the People stuck out to me as the most powerful painting out of this group. It really showed me the power of people fighting, a lady with breasts hanging out holding a musket and a French flag. The people in this painting were fighting for there liberty and it shows them being lead over dead bodies to fight. They were being lead by this powerful looking woman, and all looked to be very determined. In this picture the people of France are fighting for there Liberty. The artist was trying to describe the passion of fighting for what they believe in,in this painting. He even placed himself in the painting fighting.

  14. Title: Marat Assassinated in His Bath, by Jacques-Louis David

This was an event where the killer said that she had to kill one person to save thousands. Charlottle Corday was the murderer of Marat due to her fearing a civil war. This piece of art took place in the French Revolution and Marat was what they called a Radical Journalist. What the art was trying to say is never try to threaten of a civil war or what happened in the picture might happen to you.

  15. Marat Assassinated in His Bath
This work refers to the assassination of radical journalist Jean-Paul Marat. The artist wanted to remember his friend so he painted him shortly after his death. Marat was the only one in the painting. He was blamed by people for a massacre that killed thousands, then was assasinated. This event took place in the civil war times. I think the author was just trying to remember his friend when he painted this I don't really think there was any other reasons.

  16. The political situation that inspired the piece of Jacques-Louis David was the coronation of Napoleon. He through himself a big coronation party and hired Jacques-Louis David to paint a picture of the cerommony on a huge canvas. Napoleon and Jacques-Louis David were both involved and so were most of the guests at his party. This was done on paris. The artist was trying to get the viewers of the painting to understanding of the cult of political personality and the sophisticated craft of shaping the public image.

  17. I did The Third of May 1808 but Francisco de Goya. The thing that inspired this painting was the horrable tragity that happened on the 2nd and 3rd of may 1808. This painting is of a few french poeple killing innocent spanish people. The people that were involved were the spanish and the french. I beleive that Fransico de Goya is trying to show people that were not there the things that acctually happened and make it so that were feel simpathy for them and want to make a difference because it was a really bad thing that was going on.

  18. Liberty leading the people

This was a painting of the french people overthrowing their countrymen.

There was only one country/government involved in this painting; France.

I think the artist was trying to tell the audience that no king or government can dictate every thing to their people, and if they try they will be over thrown by the people.

  19. Marat Assassinated in His Bath, by Jacques-Louis David

I think that this painting took place in the French revolution. Marat was assassinated by some girl named Corday. Marat was from Prussian and the Revolution happened in France. The artist was apparently a friend and wanted to keep his friends memory and created a picture with his friend being murdered.

The Third of May 1808, by Francisco de Goya

The occupation of Spain by Napoleon. Napoleon soldiers are shooting people, most likely civilians. This was between France and Spain. The artist wanted to honor the people who resisted the French.

The piece that inspired me most was Marat Assassinated in His Bath. Marat was a well respected man during the French Revolution, despite his Skin disease, and was killed by Charlotte Corday. Many French people were involved including Marat and Charlotte. This all took place in France during the French Revolution. I think the artist is trying to to tell people that even though Marat spent a lot of his life in a bath, his works made him well respected, and when he died, France died a little as well.

  21. The Third of May 1808:
    (extra credit)

The Third Of May was a piece about the war, the spanish going against Napoleon and his army. It was the second one, it came after The Second of May 1808, which was The Charge of the Mamelukes. Involved were the Spanish and Napoleons army. Countries/governments involved were the spanish and french. The artist is trying to tell the truth about the war and how Napoleon's men are killing a bunch of spanish men that are not armed or dressed for battle. He is trying to show the emotion of this fight and it's unfairness.

  22. The political situation that inspired this piece was the French Revolution. More specifically, a woman named "Charlotte Corday" blamed "Jean Paul Marat" for the September massacare. The French were involved with this. If this artist was alive today I think he might say "Hey, I miss Marat, and violence is not the answer."

  23. Liberty Leading the People, by Eugene Delacroix, was inspired by the July Revolution (French Revolution of 1830), which involved the overthrow of Charles X and Louis-Philippe taking power and instituting a constitutional monarch. Delacroix was trying to say that people of France will be victorious.

  24. I chose The Coronation of Napoleon.
Like the title suggests, the painting depicts Napoleon's coronation, or rather Napoleon crowning his wife, Josephine, after the French Revolution. He made the coronation a huge event, planning it carefully to demonstrate his power and generosity and other possibly false qualities to the French people.
Napoleon, his wife, Pope Pius VII, other cardinals, the Spanich Ambassador, and other important rich people are involved. His mother is also in the painting at Napoleon's request, even though she didn't actually show up to the coronation.
The French government is involved, as well as the Papacy, all the way from Rome.
The piece is meant to be a form of propaganda, depicting Napoleon as a wonderful, perfect new leader. David (the painter) was a supporter of the French Revolution, and was happy to show Napoleon in such a good light.

    Liberty Leading the People...
The event of this painting is fictional, being that the woman depicted in this piece, Marianne, is only a emblem of France. The painting is symbolizing liberty overcoming war, and prevailing with victory.
Soldiers of the French Revolution were involved, as well as Marianne.
France and the French Revolution is the county and event.
This piece is saying that liberty shall prevail.

  28. Liberty Leading the People was inspired by the July revolution in France of 1830. Delacroix believed he was fighting for his people and his country with this painting. The woman is both an allegorical goddess and a woman of the people, and the men surrounding her are from various social classes. Liberty rising from the crowd symbolizes how freedom comes from the revolution.

  29. I chose the Third of May becuase this painting depicted how cruel war is. This painting was also shown in the video we watched a while ago about death in art. The painting looks gruesome because there's soldiers killing civilians.

  30. Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d'Armont (27 July 1768 – 17 July 1793), known to history as Charlotte Corday, was a figure of the French Revolution. In 1793, she was executed under the guillotine for the assassination of Jacobin leader Jean-Paul Marat, who was partly responsible for the Reign of Terror. His murder was memorialized in a celebrated painting by Jacques-Louis David which shows Marat after Corday had stabbed him to death in his bathtub.
