SILENT DISCUSSION

Today, you will get your discussion points through blogging.

For the 5 points you will answer one of the following questions in 2-3 sentences-
AND THEN-
'react' or 'respond' to 2 of your peers comments.
Agree or disagree or add to their train of thought, but your posts must have SUBSTANCE to count!!!!!
A mere "I agree!" or "You are so smart!" WILL NOT COUNT.

Don't forget to end with your name on all 3 of the comments that you make today.

OK.
Here are the QUESTIONS.
1) With the appearance of the first major ART CRITIC (john ruskin),the question is-
WHO IS THE BIGGEST influence on what you like?
WHOSE OPINION do you take as 'gospel'?
WHO do you listen to about artistic matters? clothes, movies, music, etc...?
WHO is this person in your life NOW?
Who was your biggest influence 10 years ago?
Who do you think will be your biggest influence in 10 years?

2) Without getting too spiritual, how do you think someone knows when they've found the thing they want to pursue for the rest of their lives? THEY JUST FEEL IT, is not an acceptable answer - really think about HOW YOU WILL know when you find your future career path...

3) Can art kill someone? How?
Can art save someone's life? How?
I KNOW YOU MIGHT try to answer this question with a joke or something, like, "YES, if it falls off the wall and crushes their skull..." But if you answer this question, try and think less literally...

REMEMBER - I ONLY COUNT INTELLIGENT RESPONSES!!!

  1. 3. Art can save your life by allowing you to see the world in a different way. It can save you from underestimating the world, and can inspire you to pursue things you never thought you could achieve. Whether or not society is able to actually act on this inspiration is up for debate, but art certainly has the power to change the world, and save individuals from becoming mindless automatons.

    1) i think the biggest influence on what you like are your parents and family members. if your parents are into rock, then you'll most likely be into a lot of rock music instead of a different genre for a while; until you start meeting new people who like different genre's than you do and start listening to their music and start liking it.

  3. 3) I think that art could kill someone becasue if someone works there whole life and takes risks to follow there passion they could have enemys. Some of there enemys might try to kill them if they feel that they have no chance to succeed with that person around or they feel threatened. And it could possible save someones life becaue they could be into hard core drugs or something bad that might kill them in the future and they find that art truly helped them out of a difficult situation.

  4. I agree with Taylor, I think parents are highly influential people, and when they encourage openness to new thoughts and ideas, that's when that influence is used positively.

  5. 2. People know they've found what they want to pursue for the rest of their life when they're able to do it even in horrible moods for extended periods of time without success, and not getting bored, frustrated, etc. It's simply if you enjoy something immensely and you feel that when you do it you are accomplishing something, then you know you are where you want to be. :)

  6. I don't think art can kill someone. I do think it can save someone's life though, because they could be going through a really hard time or dealing with some problems that could harm them or kill them or others (ex:drugs, alcohol) and they might see a piece of art that really inspires them to do better or make better of themselves, or it might change the way they think about certain things and it may encourage or influence them to change their ways.

  7. My biggest influence ten years ago was probably my daddy because he was always around me, and through out the years has taught me soo much. My biggest influence ten tears from now will probably be my best friends and possibly my husband, as well as my church because these things will, more likely then not, be very important to me.

I believe that a person has found the thing that they want to pursue for the rest of their lives when they get so excited that even the nitty gritty working details are fun. When you get so excited to have whatever your doing presented or seen by others that you can't focus, sit still, or concentrate on what else needs to be done. When you find what truly makes you happy everyday, without fail. It's something that gives you a massive rush of adrenaline that just lights your fire, and gets you STOKED!

  10. 2) I think that someone knows when they've found something they want to pursue for the rest of their lives when that person find something of interest to them. For instance, if someone really likes animals, then they will probably pursue a career that revolves around animals like a vet, or an animal trainer. I think I've already found my career path. I want to go down the path of Graphic Design. My dad is a Graphic Designer, and ever since he's started working as one, I've been really interested in it, and I've been taking classes to help me understand it more.

  15. 2. Even though it's pretty cliche, I think that the way a person finds their future career path is when they find something that they really enjoy doing and can see themselves doing for a long time. Different things resonate with different people, and when a person finds that thing that they resonate with and are passionate about, they've found their career path. Maybe it's a cliche for a reason... %)

It doesn't necessarily have to high paying or make them famous, they just have to enjoy it. For instance, if they enjoy getting paid and getting money, they might go into one of the higher-paying careers, and vise versa for people that don't care for money.

  18. I think that your parents are the biggest influencer until a certain age. Or, if not, until a certain age, then until you have more that one source of information that you trust. I am sure that people have most of the same opinions with their parents until they find out that there is more out there than that one point of view. If you have positive parents, they will let you branch off and create your own ideals without shutting you down every time.
So I guess that it is not a certain age that you have to pass to think freely, (because some people never do), but after experiences or after you trust in many people.

  21. Though I agree with Ian, I also think that there are tough days no matter what you end up pursuing. To believe that once you've found your passion there won't be any hard times is a little naive. Unfortunately, the world is designed to throw curve balls your way. However, if you've found the thing you love, it's a little easier to dodge those curve balls.

  22. I disagree with Taylor. I don't think our parents are the biggest influence. I think the media and society influence us. We see things on tv and in magazines and we like it because thats what everyone else is liking at the time and we want to be like the rest. We want to fit in to society so we go along with it. Celebrities help promote stuff and influence us because we see what they are doing and what they like so we start to like the same things just because we want to be like them because they are famous and we think they are cool.

I do believe it can. I've heard of people [kids included] that have listened to music or seen depressing art that has pushed them to the edge, and off of it. Ten years ago my biggest influence was my parents, i looked up to them alot and when you are that young no one else really matters other then your family. I believe that the biggest influence on what we like comes from the people we associate with like friends and family. They might be good influences or bad influences but it is our choice to follow which one we think is correct. The biggest influence on what I like would probably be my friends, because I tend to spend more time with them than my family.I don't take anyone's opinion as gospel because most of the time I don't even care what they're saying. My biggest influence in 10 years would have to be someone in the skateboarding industry like Don Nguyen or Corey Duffel,or someone in the music industry like Slash,Buckethead and Herman Li.And this goes back to what we like, because we are also influenced by that stuff.

  38. the biggest influence on what i like is me i am my own person and choose for myself what i like and dislike but whose opinion matters to me the most is jayden lee gallagher, my best friend. She always tells me what she honestly thinks on something no matter what, and she has very strong opinions, even though her opinions won't always change my mind. 10 years ago my biggest influence was probably my aunt or grandparents.
In ten years my biggest influence could be anyone i have no idea who it will be fate deals some pretty random cards at times.

I don't think you can know because we have this perception that enough is really never enough but maybe people like monks feel like they have enough when their soul is at rest or something. My career path will probably not be outstanding by any means in fact most peoples won't or so i've seen. i just want to be a mommy or a psychiatric nurse, i just want to leave this world knowing someones life was a little better because of me.

Well some people go crazy over art like cut off their ear and other damage to their body, people sometimes become depressed over art or just lead depressing lives and art could make it seem even worse thus leading to suicide but art can save someone too. For instance you could be in a pit of depression and art might be your release for it.

  40. {3:}
Art can totally contribute killing someone -- whether the artist takes their own life, or they are killed by another person. Art has a way of being so allegorical, and inspiring. It can both kill and save. Here's how...
Artists are always passionate people, some geniuses (or self-proclaimed ones at least), or total basket-cases. Nevertheless, whoever they are, they always want others to LIKE their work. When they receive negative feedback, it is very discouraging - sometimes leading to suicide.
However, art can also save a life. Like said above, art is very inspiring. It makes you think, and see things a different way.
    {Responding to peers comments:}
I agree with Allison. Art is inspiring, telling someone know that there are still passionate people who can grasp what is actually important in life.
I disagree with Taylor. If a child doesn't have respect for their parents, they will obstain from anything their parents support - including musical likes and dislikes. Youth has always revolted this way, and always will.

I would have to agree. I know that my parents have ZERO influence on me because I'm the exact opposite of what they are and want. I have completely different views, and morals then my parents do. I've influenced myself, by the choices I've made, things I've done, and the things that I'm attracted to.

I mean they can be an influence, but your BIGGEST influence just seems to me that your a bit of a puppet. Just because your parents can influence you doesn't mean you should let them. Make your own decisions, choices, and influence yourself. You can take suggestions and ideas from them, but living your life the way they think you should just seems ridiculous to me.

I would disagree. Dirty competition, bitter competition yes. Take Battle of the Bands for example. That's good friendly competition. Yes we still want to win but that's not going to stop us from being friends with other bands in the competition. As long as the competitors understand that this isn't about blood it's about sport, then everything will be okay. I think that gets lost in modern sports. I've never seen musical or artistic competition ruin friendships.

Do they have Glen Beck in Canada?

    ReplyDelete
  83. To Ashely Cardwell: No. I do believe that people will always have an influence on you, whether you know it or not. The TV you watch, your parents, the people you hang out with, all have an influence on what you think or feel.

    ~Zach Noble

I would have to agree with Zach. The TV does have influential powers over people, Kids to Teens in general. TV shows, commercials, etc. Try and tell you how you should act, or what to buy to be more "accepted". Most teens and kids go along with what the TV is telling them.

  85. i think my biggest influence would be the music i listen to because it can make a difference in what type of art you do. like if you listen to depressed music then your prolly going to do some art that is down and if you listen to some hardcore music then youd prolly do some intense piece of art

  86. Regarding Ashley Cardwell's comment and those responses to it-
It's true that we're influenced by others; we can't help it because we're herd animals by nature (bear with me). However, I think that some people are influenced by those around them more than others, and that some people can live so that these outside influences are minimized.

  87. I agree with Ian for the most part. Everyone has bad days and they may not feel like working for a day or so just because they are so exhausted that they don't think they can handle it, or maybe there is something else going on that makes them not want to work at the time. But, it's true it should be something that makes you happy when doing it most of the time, and you should like everything about it including the small details, not just one part because most likely you won't be happy. You shouldn't get bored of it easily or have to dread doing it all the time, you should be happy and excited to do it.
    Ashley J.

I understand that you will have a bad day and not want to work, but I think that what you pursue should be able to pull you out of your slum, and put you in a better place, or at least get you headed in that direction. I know that I want to be a musician for the rest of my life, because it seems like not matter what life throws at me, A good session with the guys can pull me out and get me happier. I'm not saying this will be an instant cure all but it should certainly help your mood, otherwise I don't think it should be what your pursuing. I know that my musical career will be a hard one, and it's not going to be easy, but I enjoy it with my everything I am. I know it's been my passion for 7 almost 8 years, and it will continue to be for the rest of my life.

  88. I disagree with Hannah because yeah people have enemies but even if they kill that person I wouldn't blame it on art, I'd blame the person for having bad morals and being almost insane to take it to that extreme. There are rivalries between everything. for example there are enemies in business, if there is a competition for a manager place and one kills the other because they are enemies, it doesnt mean that business kills people. theres also enemies in high school and we don't kill each other just because someone is more popular or pretty. so, if someone gets killed because of art its not the art that kills people, it's the crazy people that live in this world.

Everyone has something they care about but because that usually requires the most work I feel like most people settle, whether that's because of circumstances of the time or what they need to do to keep a roof over their head.

  121. I don't agree with the idea that passion equals happiness even in failure. I think that it's rather that the success in your passion overrides the remorse that comes with failure. Throughout history, we see people that continually fail and this failure usually derives them elsewhere rather than into ecstatics. I don't know if that's a word. Haa.

I also agree with miranda in that everyone is influenced differently. Some people drown in the opinions and examples of others, while some prosper by directing towards it's opposite.
